Music for curious spirits and open hearts

Nema Vinkeloe Uuskyla is a young yet skilful singer, violinist and violist who has performed in Sweden, Germany, Ireland, Italy, India, Uganda and USA. She is the cofounder of Open Horizon Records and a board member of the organisation GlobalKulture and also a freelance musician since 2011 and has performed in concerts, conducted workshops and recorded in different constellations and contexts. She has received Western classical training in her instruments, and appears on three studio albums and one live recording. Biggi Vinkeloe Band, with Biggi Vinkeloe, Peeter Uuskyla and Roberto Bellatalla, released a record and toured in Italy in 2016. In January 2018, Nema conducted music workshops with Biggi Vinkeloe in rural Uganda; in January/February 2019, they conducted workshops in Government Schools and performed in different venues in Bangalore and Mysore, India. Since 2011, she is involved in genre-bending projects with South Indian musicians.


Nema possess a great curiosity for different music traditions and expressions and sees music as a tool for communication and cooperation over cultural barriers. Her singing and playing is rooted in classical and folk music, presenting a vivid mixture of different traditions and expressions with elements of improvisation. Her own compositions bridge Nordic traditional folk music and improvisation. With her ethereal voice and Nordic sound, she invites listeners to explore soundscapes of emotions.

PROJECTS

NAB Trio / NABplus, 2018-Ongoing

Trio with Annika Törnqvist (electric bass) and Biggi Vinkeloe (alto saxophone, flute). NABplus performed and recorded in Bangalore, India, with Indian musicians. NABplus will soon release an album recorded in Bangalore 2019. In December 2019, NABplus released the album Sētuvegaḷu, a live recording from a concert in August 2019 in Vävra, Sweden.

BAM, Uganda January-February 2018

Bishozi Art Movement. Workshops in music, fine art and sculpture in 13 villages in Southwestern Uganda, and an art exhibition in Kampala, with Biggi Vinkeloe and Annette Rosati.

Lúsinnia, 2016-Ongoing

Duo with Karl Eriksson. Irish and Swedish folk music, arranged for violin, guitar/ accordion and voice.

Biggi Vinkeloe Band, 2016-Ongoing

Quartet with Biggi Vinkeloe, Peeter Uuskyla (drums) and Roberto Bellatalla (double bass). Improv mixed with original compositions. Tour in Italy in 2016 and 2017; concerts in Gothenburg in April and September 2017. The album Aura Via Appia was released 2017 by Omlott Records in Gothenburg.

ZAËA Quartet, 2015-Ongoing

Quartet with Gabriel Henningson (organ), Christin Gustafsson (soprano) and Biggi Vinkeloe (alto saxophone, flute). Church concerts with sacred music and improvisation.

SHO, 2015-Ongoing

Stans Häftigaste Orkester – the City’s Amazing Orchestra. Workshop orchestra founded by Biggi Vinkeloe. Since 2017 assisting director, and organiser of concerts and workshops with the orchestra and guests.
